LIGHTING DESIGN.

Carefully considered lighting can transform a space at night, creating a really enjoyable atmosphere in the home. Poorly considered lighting, on the other hand, produces unappealing spaces which does not do a home justice. The evening is when people spend a lot of their time at home, so it makes sense to carefully consider the lighting for the right feel and function in your space. We love to highlight architectural features in a home, to create interest, ambience and texture play. We have many options to explore and help you make the best of your space.

At Lighting Options the lighting design is undertaken by our Interior Designer, Cassandra Dillon and owner Marshall Hill.  Our detailed lighting schedules make wiring and installation of fittings easy and straightforward by including the technical information and other relevant data needed, reducing the chance of any errors.

Lighting Options can supply a wide range of fittings to suit your style and budget. Our clients love how we offer a complete service for design and supply as well as assistance with feature lighting to suit their style.

A GUIDE TO LIGHTING.

At Lighting Options we use layers of light so you add task lighting as you need it.  We design light placement to be exactly where you needed it. A field of downlights all over your home is a feature that can stay firmly in the 2000’s!

Lighting has such power on how you feel in your space. Don’t miss the opportunity to create this feeling when constructing your home.

LIVING SPACES.

In a room full of downlights the ceiling actually appears rather dark and low. The result can be glary and often inflexible. Downlights are excellent at providing task lighting. However, for general ambient lighting we aim to deliver this with a variety of sources. Up lighting for instance provides ambience without the glare. By pushing light onto the ceiling it gives a feeling of spaciousness. Depending on the ceiling height and shape we can achieve this is a number of ways.

Downlights are useful in strategic locations when used sparingly for task or accent use, especially if a lamp is not going to be used. Not all downlights are created equal, in fact they can be very different in the effect they have on the room. Brightness, glare, light coverage, colour are just some of the variables. We can show you various fittings in our showroom and explain what sets different fittings apart.

LED strip lighting hidden in recessed pelmets is also great way to cast a gentle ambient light in a space whilst highlighting interesting features. It particularly works well down textural curtains or a textural wall.

Lamps are the finishing touch and add flexibility to the way you light and furnish a space. They are easy and cheap to update with interior trends.

ACCENT LIGHTING.

Homes with interesting architectural features are a joy to light. Textural walls, entry statements, high ceilings and interesting materials all offer opportunities to light. We carefully look at your plans identify opportunities and discuss key features with you so we can make use of these features.

Some ways of doing this include downlights adjacent to the wall, uplighting from the floor, LED strip from a recessed pelmet and directional lights. As always the devil is in the detail – specifying the correct light angle, distance from the wall, brightness, and colour are all important considerations for achieving the desired effect.

ARTWORK.

Highlighting key art pieces is another layer to add to your space. We would always prefer to light up a feature than to light up the floor. For instance in hallways lighting artwork with directional light along the passage still provides adequate light for the hallway but keeps the glare away from the eyes and provides interest to the passer by.

When it comes to artwork a fully rotatable and tiltable light will give you the best flexibility and accuracy of placement. The colour rendering index (CRI) of the light source is an imperative consideration for lighting artwork. The CRI is how well the light source will reveal the colours accurately compared to natural light, and this is just one of the factors we would consider when suggesting a fitting.

BATHROOM LIGHTING.

Placement of lights is carefully considered to suit your bathroom layout and to give you the right levels of light in each part of the space. We do not light in the centre of the room for the sake of it as you unfortunately often see in a standard lighting plan (not ours!). It’s not needed or helpful.

Wall lights are great for providing both ambience and light directly onto your face when looking in the mirror. The fitting must be well selected to push light onto your face – an up/down light isn’t helpful for a vanity.

We need to get light onto your face and we can achieve that with directional lights that reflect light off your mirror and back onto your face. This works with tall mirrors but not as well with short mirrors, so a different approach is used for these.

LED strip can be fantastic for adding to the ambience of a bathroom and can be added into your design in a range of ways – under a floating vanity, under and/or on top of a mirror cabinet, in a shower niche or floating seat, or even from a recessed pelmet casting light down the wall.

Each bathroom design and style are different so we work with our clients to find a perfect solution for them and their budget.

THE POWER OF NIGHT LIGHTS.

Night lights that are seamlessly integrated and well placed are also a feature we like to offer our design clients. In bathrooms they can offer low light for night time bathroom visits without the need to turn on bright lights which may disrupt going back to sleep. They can also be useful strategically placed in hallways or stairs for night time movements (particularly  useful for those with children!). Placement is carefully considered to avoid these being visible from bedrooms.
